The University of Kentucky Center for Manufacturing has revamped and improved its nationally and internationally recognized Boot Camp program, increasing its value to students and industry. The redesigned six course curriculum is an option in the MSMSE Manufacturing Systems Engineering Program.
Improvements include:
- Expanded content mirrors industry certification course
- Even more relevancy to prospective employers
- Graduates will have an advantage in the job market
- Can be completed within one calendar year
- Less expensive for the student
- Leaves summer free for summer jobs
- Now a six-course option in MSMSE program
The new six course curriculum is offered in three rounds of two courses each over the course of two semesters and the first summer session.
Round One
Introduction to
Lean Systems Operations
- MFS 503 - Principles and Practices of Lean Manufacturing
- MFS 526 - Operations Management
- Round One Learning Objectives:
- Discuss the philosophy and technical structure of lean systems
- Define the basic tools and their applications in lean systems
- Demonstrate the use of each tool in a lean factory setting
Round Two
Design of Lean Systems
- MFS 612 - Organizational Learning
- MFS 525 - Lean Value Stream Design
- Round Two Learning Objectives:
- Design a system structure for continuous learning
- Redesign existing traditional structures to lean structures
- Demonstrate the capacity to create actual cellular structures
- Utilize visual management and other toos to optimize lean systems
Round Three
Leadership and Management of
Lean Systems
- MFS 6xx - Management for a Lean System
- MFS 6xx - Leadership for the Lean Enterprise

- Learning Objectives:
- Deploy "shop floor" management principles and practices
- Apply industrial engineering principles at the shop floor level
- Utilitize team dynamics principles in collaborative team settings
- Deploy a leadership system for the lean enterprise
- Develop transformational leadership stratagies that transform traditional systems
- Develop and deploy an enterprise-wide lean strategic plan
The Lean Certificate Option will be an immersive learning experience designed for approximately 18 students. Graduates will be prepared to teach, coach, motivate, and lead people on the shop floor through a lean transformation.
Concepts introduced in the classroom are applied in lab exercises involving training factories, simulations, and field activities. Round One and Three will be taught during regular 15-week sessions, with Round Two taking place at a faster pace during the four-week first summer session.
New content has been added in Round Three that matches the certification courses currently offered to engineering professionals, making it of equivalent value to perspective employers. Those graduating with the Lean Certificate and an MSMSE degree will be in high demand.
Complete integration in the MSMSE in Manufacturing Systems Engineering has been achieved by creating the Lean Certificate Option. This includes a dual-degree program where co-op undergraduate engineering students can concurrently work on a BS in their engineering discipline and an MS in Manufacturing Systems Engineering. It will also reduce the cost to the student in two ways. Since the Second Summer Session is no longer included, the student is free to pursue summer employment. And because the courses are offered and taught during the regular semesters, increased tuition costs are no longer charged.
